Most Q4 tablecloth and tableware orders are not lost on price. They are lost on the calendar. Between the Mid-Autumn Festival on 25-27 September and the National Day Golden Week shutdown from 1 to 7 October 2026, when Chinese factories restart on 8 October, the number of working days left to produce, inspect and load a seasonal order falls sharply. If your Christmas and New Year range has not gone into production yet, the constraint is no longer the quotation – it is the vessel.

Capacity before 1 October decides what leaves on a Q4 vessel.
What Golden Week 2026 Removes From the Q4 Window
Forwarders confirmed the 2026 dates in early September. Mainfreight’s China holiday shipping alert, issued on 10 September, lists the Golden Week closure as 1 October (Thursday) through 7 October (Wednesday), with normal operations resuming on 8 October. The Mid-Autumn public holiday falls on 25 September, and much of the supply chain runs reduced shifts around it. Add the surrounding weekends and most factories have roughly three usable production weeks before the shutdown.
Practically, that is a hard gate-in deadline: cartons must be finished, inspected and delivered to the forwarder before the holiday, not during it. Bookings for late-September sailings fill first, and cut-offs usually sit seven to ten days before the vessel. The first week back is not normal production either, so “we will ship it after the holiday” usually means a mid-to-late October sailing.
The rate side is more forgiving. Drewry’s World Container Index for 17 September 2026 put the composite at about USD 4,500 per 40ft container, up 1% week on week, while the Asia-Europe legs softened: Shanghai to Rotterdam fell 9% to roughly USD 3,626 and Shanghai to Genoa slipped 5% to about USD 4,016 per 40ft.
The Number That Decides Freight Cost per Piece Is Not the FOB Price
Freight cost per piece is total ocean cost divided by the pieces that fit in one container. That denominator is set by your carton specifications, which is where two suppliers quoting the same tablecloth can differ by more than 25% on landed cost.
Worked example, for illustration only. Supplier A packs its solid-colour disposable tablecloths 200 pieces to a 60 x 40 x 35 cm master carton – 0.084 cubic metres – so a 40ft high cube loaded to a realistic 68 cubic metres holds about 809 cartons, roughly 161,800 pieces. Supplier B ships the same 200 pieces in a 65 x 45 x 40 cm carton, 0.117 cubic metres, so the same container carries about 581 cartons, or 116,200 pieces. At USD 4,500 per container, freight moves from about 2.8 cents per piece to 3.9 cents. On a 500,000-piece programme that gap exceeds USD 5,000, and it never appears on a quotation comparison sheet.
Before comparing prices, ask each supplier for master carton dimensions in centimetres, pieces per carton, net and gross weight, cubic metres per 1,000 pieces, and pieces per 20ft, 40ft and 40ft high cube. Ask per SKU: dinnerware nests differently from roll stock. Our notes on reading a plastic tablecloth quotation line by line cover the pricing side of the same conversation.
Container Loading: Why 8-12% of Your Cube Disappears
Nominal capacity is not usable capacity. A 20ft container is about 33 cubic metres, a 40ft about 67 and a 40ft high cube about 76, but a real floor-loaded carton load lands closer to 62-70 cubic metres in a high cube once pallet gaps, door clearance and stacking limits are respected. Palletising on standard 120 x 80 cm pallets typically costs another 8-12% of cube plus the pallet weight. Palletise only if your customer requires it; for your own DC with a dock and forklift, floor loading wins.
Weight matters too, and it is where tableware differs from most light consumer goods. In the United States a 40ft container is normally capped near 44,000 lb, about 20 tonnes, for road movement. Printed tablecloths are so light that cube binds first, but filled party kits and plastic dinnerware ranges can hit the weight limit before the container is full, so check gross weight per carton alongside the cube calculation. Ask for a loading plan before the vessel sails – carton count, stack pattern, weight and load-out photos. It makes receiving and shortage claims far cheaper to resolve.
Five Things to Get in Writing Before You Release a Q4 PO
- Production milestone and gate-in date stated relative to the 1-7 October blackout, with the inspection date in between.
- Carton dimensions, cubic metres per 1,000 pieces and pieces per container by equipment type.
- Who attends pre-shipment inspection, and the fallback if it fails on the last working day before the holiday.
- A roll-over clause: if the vessel rolls, who pays storage, demurrage and rebooking.
- Documents ready in advance – invoice, packing list, HS code per SKU, test reports and a label check against approved artwork.
Why Buyers Plan Load-Out With Runxiang
Changzhou Runxiang has manufactured plastic tablecloths and disposable tableware for 20 years, running more than 30 production machines across injection moulding, film extrusion and printing, at a daily output of around 160,000 pieces. That matters in exactly this situation: a mixed Q4 container with printed seasonal tablecloths, solid-colour covers, napkins and plastic dinnerware can be produced, inspected and loaded on one schedule instead of three. We quote carton dimensions and cubature per SKU up front, build the loading plan in-house, run OEM and ODM programmes from artwork to pre-production sample, and handle export documentation in English.
